Swiping Isn't Working, And Neither Is The Aunty Network
Why dating apps and rishta WhatsApp groups rarely lead to marriages for Sikh singles, and what works instead.

If you are a Sikh single looking for a life partner, you already know the search is not simple. You are not only looking for someone you connect with. You are looking for someone whose family will sit comfortably beside yours, whose understanding of faith sits near your own, and with whom you could imagine sitting before Guru Granth Sahib Ji at your Anand Karaj. An app cannot hold any of that. Which is why, for so many of us, it doesn't work.
Apps ask the wrong questions
A profile asks for your height, your job and a few photographs. It does not ask what matters. Does he keep his kesh, and does that matter to you? Is she amritdhari or still finding her own relationship with Sikhi, and would your families understand each other? Do you both want to live near your parents, or build something further away? Is Punjabi spoken at home, and will it be spoken to your children? These are the questions that decide whether a marriage is happy in ten years. Not a photograph in a Ray-Bans selfie.
The rishta network has its limits too
Many of us have the other experience as well: the aunty with good intentions and a biodata that gets forwarded around three WhatsApp groups by Sunday. Your details are passed between people you have never met, judged on a photograph and a family name, and somehow everybody at the gurdwara seems to know you are looking.
That system was built for a smaller world, where families knew one another for generations. It was never designed for Sikhs living across London, Birmingham, Toronto, Vancouver, New York or California, with careers, their own views and a wish to choose for themselves.
What sits between the two
Professional matchmaking takes what was good about the old way, that someone who understands your world is actively looking on your behalf, and removes what was difficult about it.
Your details stay private. Nothing is forwarded, shared in a group chat or discussed at the gurdwara. Your profile is only ever shown to someone we believe is genuinely right for you, and only with your permission.
We interview every member personally, so we know who they are rather than who they appear to be online. We ask the questions the apps never ask, and the ones an aunty might not think to.
Why our family matters to your family
We are a mother and daughter, both certified by Matchmaker Academy, and that is deliberate rather than accidental.
Between us we understand both halves of this conversation. One of us has spent a lifetime in our community and knows what parents are hoping for when they ask about a family's background, and what they are quietly worried about. The other knows what it is to be a Sikh in your twenties, thirties in Britain, North America or anywhere in the diaspora, wanting a partner who understands your faith and your career in equal measure.
When you talk to us, nothing needs explaining. Not why your grandmother's opinion matters. Not why you want a partner who will come to the gurdwara with you. Not why "just meet someone at a wedding" has stopped being useful advice.
It is about more than two people
In our community, a marriage joins two families. That is not a burden, it is one of the most beautiful things about how we do this. But it does mean a match has to work on several levels at once, and that is exactly the work we do.
That is true wherever you are. Whether your family settled in London, Ontario or the Bay Area, the questions are the same, and we search across all of it.
We also welcome anyone whose path has not been straightforward. If you are divorced, widowed or simply looking later in life, you will find no judgement here, only the same care as everyone else.
A single introduction is worth a thousand matches
We make five hand-selected introductions in a year. Some may see that as few, next to endless profiles on a screen. We see it as the point.
Every one of those five has been chosen because we sat with them, listened, and believed they could be right for you. That is a different thing altogether from an algorithm that has never met either of you.
If the search has been wearing you down, it may not be that the right person isn't out there. It may be that nobody has properly looked.
